Title I Bingo for Books/Read Naturally
As a Title I program, one of the things we encourage is reading at home. Our “Bingo for Books” event provides families with books to bring home and read with their children. Also, we use the “Read Naturally” program to support struggling readers. We need to replace some of our 14 year old tape players and headphones to keep this program running.
Evaluate Hand Function for School Skills
Using the hand evaluation kit, incoming kindergartners qualified for occupational therapy services, will be measured for hand range of motion, grip strength, pinch strength, unilateral and bilateral hand coordination, and touch sensitivity.
Four Seasons Nature Center
Build and maintain a nature center for cross-curricular instruction, ecological preservation, and community enhancement.
STARS (Students are realizing success)
STARS is a Middle schools at-risk program that works with students on academic success and personal growth. As part of our curriculum, we would like to incorporate “mountaineering/rock climbing as a character building and personal growth component. The desired results would be: increased self esteem, exposure to positive physical activities, introduction to new skills and hobbies, and the ability to work positively with a variety of people.
Parent Resource Library
Increase the number of books in our parent resource libraries throughout our district.
Baby Think it Over
The Baby Think It Over are “babies” that go home with students. The student is the full-time caregiver for the baby. Students experience the reality of the demands of a baby. Many families have said great discussions have been started by the experience.
PLHS Writing Center
A one stop writing center that works to create a safe space for students to talk about their writing. It will not be just for English students and their papers; it will be for all students and every paper they are assigned in every class for which they are assigned a written paper.
Fishing in our Schools
SPIRIT Players Training for 2008-09
The project is to cover the cost of two days of SPIRIT Players training and accommodations for the trainers (from Cornerstone Productions) for October 5 and 6, 2008. (Students Presenting Issues Relating to Intense Times)
IB Teacher Training
It is our desire to train more staff members in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program so that we can expand our program to a full school model. We are looking to send ten teachers to training this summer.
Print Music Software
Print music is a software program to be used in composition of musical pieces. After students have composed their piece on paper, they can use Print Music to have computer play back and dictate a final project of their composition.
Improving Social Communication & Speech Through Movies
It is the vision of the PLS school district’s speech language pathologists that our students with social communication, speech, and language disabilities will have the opportunity to improve their communication skills by using technology to create movies and actively engage themselves in their learning.
Assistive Technology Lending Library
The district is now providing information, training, and equipment for assistive technology for students with special needs. These services had previously been provided through the Minnesota River Valley Special Education Cooperative.
Stability BallsThe stability balls will be used in the classroom for increased self regulation and strategies for increasing focus and lowering anxiety.
